Last week, I spent the whole day at Bank End Primary School in Worsbrough, South Yorkshire. Everyone was so welcoming and interested in what I had to say and show them, I thought I’d write a post here. I am available for school visits! Typically, I visit primary schools, where I perform scientific demonstrations and…
‘Seeing Science’ – out 11 October 2022
I was so excited a few days ago to receive a few advance copies of my new book ‘Seeing Science – The Art of Making the Invisible Visible’. It will be published, by the wonderful people at The MIT Press, on 11 October this year. I’m so very proud of this book, and very excited…
The proof has arrived
The proof copy for my forthcoming book has arrived, and I’m sharing a page with you! The design looks stunning, and I’m busy picking through the text to make sure nothing has gone awry. Suffice to say I’m excited. The book is scheduled for publication late August.
More praise for The Atom
My book “The Atom – A Visual Tour” continues to sell well, and has received lots of really great reviews. Here’s a snippet of an in-depth review from physicist James Marshall Smith, at the New York Review of Books: To say that the book covers a vast array of topics is an understatement, as it…
It’s about time …
Did you know … In Great Britain in 1752, Wednesday 2nd September was followed by Thursday 14th September. In Scotland, 1599 had only nine months. There have been 25 million minutes since 1972; 27 of them have had 61 seconds rather than the normal 60. Time feels weird at the moment, during lockdown. Routines are…
GrrlScientist on ‘The Atom’
I am very pleased that ‘The Atom’ has been listed on the wonderful GrrlScientist’s list of top ten science books of 2018. She says: “The Atom is an engaging and visually appealing overview of physics and chemistry, as well as the history of our thinking about atoms and their structure: how atomic interactions create the…
The Atom … to be published in September 2018
In a follow up to ‘The Cell‘, I have just finished writing the text for ‘The Atom’, to be published in September 2018 by the same publisher, Ivy Press (part of the Quarto group). This time, it is being published in association with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which is very exciting. Watch this space…

I’m delighted that my book ‘Home Lab’ has won the prestigious Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize 2017. The book is called ‘Maker Lab’ in the USA, and published on both sides of the Atlantic by DK. I can announce that I have recently finished the follow-up book, which will be published in spring 2018….
The Diary of Curious Cuthbert
Just out is my new book ‘The Diary of Curious Cuthbert’. Its hero is Cuthbert Armeeni, scientist, inventor and philosopher, and his diary entries are retold in rhyme. One Amazon customer said “Brilliant educational storytelling through poetry. Jack Challoner is the Roald Dahl of Science!” I was fortunate enough to have the book illustrated by…
Maker Lab and the Kardashians …
Well, my book Maker Lab (called Home Lab in the UK) has skyrocketed up to number 72 in the amazon.com bestsellers list, all thanks to Kim Kardashian’s model sister Kendall Jenner! Kendall bought the book for Kim’s daughter North’s fourth birthday – and she even bought the ingredients for each of her four favourite activities from the book….
