Making science accessible,
interesting, fun, memorable,
engaging, relevant …

How I became an author
After earning a degree in physics, I trained to become a teacher and subsequently worked at the Science Museum in London. I left the Museum in 1992 to begin a full-time career as a writer and science presenter.
I have authored books for a variety of publishers, such as The MIT Press, The University of Chicago Press, Quarto, Bloomsbury, DK, and Wiley.
What else do I do?
I am often called upon to act as a consultant for publishers, museums and television companies. I also write and present science shows, in Museums. I have also worked at the BBC, developing factual programmes. In 2018, I started my own independent publishing company, Explaining Science Publishing. I’m also a keen musician – I sing and play mostly jazz – and a few years ago, I wrote a musical about the Solar System.
Also, I do school visits …
School Visits

Yes, I am available for school visits. I am frequently asked to speak at primary and secondary schools, where I perform scientific demonstrations and talk about science and about being a writer. Often, I will also do a reading – recently I have begun reading excerpts from my series of books called Rhyme and Reason.
I can tailor my sessions to any year group and any scientific topic. If you would like me to visit your school, why not get in touch, or if you prefer, contact me via Contact an Author.
